By profession I am a fashion designer, who has settled into teaching fashion design after a successful career in the fashion industry. However, it was SINDY, who I first practiced on all those years ago when, as a child, I started designing and making clothes, and dreaming about what I was going to do when I ‘grew up’ !!
I suppose it was obvious that when I started collecting Sindy I would make the clothes that I either couldn’t find, or couldn’t afford - this is how sindy-repro came about!
I also found that I couldn’t find/afford minty dolls, especially ones with good hair, and I began experimenting with restoring. There is something really lovely about finding a poor forgotten doll and turning her back into the gorgeous creature that she once was!
I really love working with dolls, and try to be as reasonable as possible with my prices, so that everyone has the chance to own a lovely collection. I hope you enjoy having a peek at what I do, and a BIG THANKS to my friends and family for their support, encouragement, inspiration and compliments about my work. Helen xxxxx All work is carried out in my studio, where the outfits are produced using factory methods, and from patterns that i have made. Sometimes the patterns are taken from the original outfit, but it is impossible to find some of them!! (as they were never made beyond prototype) so i use photographs to create the pattern from. 60’S MAMSELLE ABOUT HOW I WORK HOME about restoration methods a restoration story! ABOUT ME!
Take a peek behind the scenes at SINDY-REPRO! Fabrics are sourced as closely to the originals as possible and vintage fabrics are often used. Sometimes the quality of the original fabrics was not too great!- hence the short life. I always use the best quality, most authentic looking fabric.
Sometimes it is necessary to dye the fabric to get the right colour match (as with the jumpers) this is done professionally and WILL NOT rub off onto your dolls! All of these dolls have been restored using a combination of total or partial re-root. The type of hair used depends upon the type of doll and the condition of her existing hair. Sometimes it is necessary to mix the type of hair in order to get the right texture, or the colour to get the right shade. Hair is styled appropriately, and can be combed and restyled afterwards.
Face paint is sometimes carefully re-touched if necessary, and marks may be removed from the face/body.
I am careful to stipulate which restoration methods have been used on my dolls for sale. This Trendy Girl is a total re-root, using a mix of hair type and
a blended colour. Her facepaint and lashes were perfect.
Now part of my private collection.
This first issue 1963 Sindy has had a total re-root in one type of
coarser hair, in a flat copper colour. Her lip paint had to be dabbed!
She is part of my private collection This stunning titian Walker had to have a lot of work!
Her hair has been restored using a blending/partial re-root
method, retaining about 60% of her original hair. Her face has
had marks removed, lips have been touched-up and eyelashes
have been replaced. I have kept her as part of my collection. I wanted to try to reproduce the HTF Ash Blond colour on this trendy girl.
The hair has been mixed in quality and colour, blended to get the right
shade. I left it long as it is so thick and luxurious! her facepaint and lashes
were intact. She was one of my first projects, and i re-rooted her totally.
I used slightly coarser hair than Saran, in the exact shade used for
the blond sideparts. Her facepaint was excellent, but her
eyelashes have been replaced. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY NAV SIKAND PLUCKED FROM A BOX OF HOPEFULLS!! BEHEADED AND SCALPED! A FEW OF THE KNOTTED OUCH! NEARLY THERE!
